Turd

Today, I return from lunch. I was going to brush my teeth. I open the bathroom door and the smell hits me before I notice it.

The turd was floating in the toilet, forgotten by whoever put it there.

Only a reflection of what goes on in this office.

After this kind of stuff, I understand why The Office won the Golden Globe. The rise in productivity here in the US is mostly due to fear of dismissal, not to fun at work.

I wish I had a slightly more positive view about this, but seriously, right now I am just disgusted.

My problem with blogging

I have a problem with blogging, it turns out.

I don't like to write about me. I mean, I can put a song I like here, I can expose a bit of me here and there, but I really don't like to write about me. A rule from which, of course, I'm departing right now.

Also because what I want to write is personal experience, and that depends in part of the other people I interact with on a daily or weekly basis, and I wouldn't feel comfortable exposing other people's lives in my blog. I tried to use the ancient trick to solve problems, by telling myself I knew the answer to it, just remember it! The result I came up with was to ask everyone I know permission to write stuff on blogs, which is impractical.

I still don't have a solution to this... how to write honestly, about me, interestingly and, well, without trampling other people's personal spaces. I don't think I can, really...

Not having a solution won't stop me, but it will probably push me in the direction of taking it into fiction or into a marketing vehicle... we'll see... In the meantime, I'll continue posting sporadically.

Don't stand so close!

To start the year well, here's a little song by the Police that is not just great, it reflects something I've seen quite a few times happening during my years as a student and even later as a teacher (even though it was in an assistantship).

Don't Stand So Close To Me

Young teacher the subject
Of schoolgirl fantasy
She wants him so badly
Knows what she wants to be
Inside him there's longing
This girl's an open page
Book marking - she's so close now
This girl is half his age

Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me

Her friends are so jealous
You know how bad girls get
Sometimes it's not so easy
To be the teacher's pet
Temptation, frustration
So bad it makes him cry
Wet bus stop, she's waiting
His car is warm and dry

Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me

Loose talk in the classroom
So hurt they try and try
Strong words in the staff room
The accusations fly
It's no use, he sees her
He starts to shake and cough
Just like the old man in
That book by Nabakov

Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
Don't stand, don't stand so
Don't stand so close to me
